Preparation of the Tasmanian Planning Policies

What's new?

The Tasmanian Planning Commission has completed its public exhibition of the draft Tasmanian Planning Policies. To view the submissions received and for further details regarding the Commission’s assessment process, please visit their website.

Summary

The Tasmanian Government is seeking to establish Tasmanian Planning Policies (TPPs) as a comprehensive, high-level policy framework for the planning system that covers important issues, not just for planners and decision makers, but for all Tasmanians.

The TPPs will shape the future for Tasmania through informing strategic land use planning and the planning rules in the Tasmanian Planning Scheme.

The TPPs will also guide the comprehensive review of the three regional land use strategies in line with the recommendations from the Premier’s Economic and Social Recovery Advisory Council (PESRAC) Report released in March 2021.

The State Planning Office (SPO) has prepared the draft TPPs, which included extensive consultation with the Tasmanian community and key stakeholders. The next stage includes independent review of the draft TPPs by the Tasmanian Planning Commission and recommendations to the Minister.

The Minister for Planning approved the draft TPPs to go to the Tasmanian Planning Commission in accordance with section 12C(3) of the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 (the Act), and gave notice directing it to undertake public exhibition of the draft TPPs.

Public exhibition period was from 28 March to 26 June 2023.

Consultation by the State Planning Office (closed)

The State Planning Office held a six week consultation on the draft TPPs from 19 September to 1 November 2022 in accordance with section 12C(2) of the Act. This period overlapped with local government elections, so planning authorities were given an extension to comment on the consultation draft of the TPPs until 30 November 2022.

A Report on Consultation was subsequently approved by the Minister for Planning, which is available below. This report discusses the submissions, responses to issues raised, and provides an overview of the modifications made to the draft TPPs.

The modifications made to the draft TPPs were informed by over 70 submissions from a range of stakeholders including planning authorities, industry groups, community organisations, state agencies and members of the public.

The finalised draft TPPs are now subject to public exhibition by the Commission.
