Issuing of Interim Planning Directive No. 7 – Exemption for Display Homes

The Minister has made Interim Planning Directive No. 7 to introduce an exemption for display homes. The exemption enables an existing dwelling to be used as a display home for up to 3 years without requiring a planning permit. The interim planning directive becomes effective on 19 July 2023  and applies to all interim planning schemes and the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme 1997.

An interim planning directive (IPD) provides for a draft planning directive to have interim effect while it is being formally assessed by the Tasmanian Planning Commission (the Commission). Visit the Tasmanian Planning Commission website for details about the assessment of the related draft Planning Directive No. 10.

IPDs may be issued by the Minister after considering a recommendation from the Commission regarding a related draft planning directive and if the Minister is satisfied that the provisions are:

necessary or desirable to address a critical or significant planning issue in the immediate term; and

in the public interest in the immediate term.

The State Planning Provisions (SPPs) were approved in 2017, but they do not have effect until a council’s Local Provisions Schedule is approved, replacing the current interim planning scheme. There are still several councils with interim planning schemes or older planning schemes in place, to which this IPD7 will apply.
